Will You Be THAT Bride?

I was at the dry cleaner last night, waiting my turn and the girl in front of me was trying on a bridesmaid's dress. She then said to the owner, "OK, the bride said the dress needs to be hemmed to be two and a half inches above the middle of my knee cap". I couldn't help but snicker and gave the girl a sympathetic look.

A couple things went through my mind.... why the middle of the knee cap? Why the length specified to half-inch increments? I mean I get it, I understand wanting the girls' dresses to all look like they're relatively the same length, but wow, that was the most specific alteration direction I'd ever heard.

Which brings me to the question, will you be THAT bride?

Will you tell the girls exactly how to wear their hair?
Will you specify what color nail polish (hands and feet) they should wear?
Will you make specific requirements as to the jewelry?
Will they be required to wear the exact same shoes?

I am not saying there is anything particularly wrong with giving your girls direction, but I also think these girls are your best friends for a reason, and I say, give them a little leeway. Let them wear their hair in a style that flatters them. Let them pick the strapless or v-neck version of the bridesmaids dress. Trust that they're going to wear a nice shade of nail polish -- does it really matter if it is Ballet Slippers versus Mademoiselle?

What do you think? What will be your non-negotiables for your bridesmaids? Or if you've been a bridesmaid, what's the craziest request you've gotten from a bride?

  3. This is so funny, and so true! It made me think of the email I sent out to my bridesmaids before my wedding in Oct. of 08. I thought I'd share...

    Hey ladies!

Okay, so first let me apologize for the "informal" email thing - I know you all probably don't mind, I just figure it's the easiest way to get this information to all of you. You know I love you all and would love to hear your sweet little voices :)

Anyway, so sorry I haven't been as on-top-of-my-game as I'd like to have been - with the move and everything going on things have been a bit crazy, and I know you guys are super busy as well. I just wanted to let you know a few things about the wedding, I know some of you had asked me but I don't think I've spoken to everyone about it. So here goes:

-Our church is at 1:30 in the afternoon on October 25th. The photographer will be at my house 2 hours before, so be ready for 11:30 am at my house and I promise to have a mimosa waiting for you. You can get dressed there if you like, just have your hair and makeup done so you're all set.

-Hair and makeup: Hair should be all up and curled and I'd like everyone to wear 3 shades of gold eyeshadow and liner I have picked out for you, it's Mac #...haha just kidding ;) I don't mind you girls doing whatever it is that you want for these two. I figure it would be complete chaos to try and have 10 girls getting ready in one spot, plus the moms and myself, so I didn't organize anything, but feel free to do whatever you like.

-Shoes/accessories: Again, whatever is comfortable for you guys, I just ask that you stick to gold. I know most of you said you have a pair already.

-I will send you details about the rehearsal dinner soon, but nothing is solidified yet. I'm going to try and make it for the Thursday night before, which is the 23rd. The church is St. Augustine's in Ossining. More details to come on this one later...

-Your dresses are in! You can pick them up whenever you get a chance, just remember they will need the balance. They charge $75 for alterations as you probably all know, so feel free to take it wherever you normally go instead.

If I forgot anything, feel free to email/call and ask me any questions you have! I miss all of you and can't wait to see you soon. I'm so psyched that it's coming up so quickly and that you are all going to be such a big part of the day. OK, no more cheese. Miss you guys!!!

    Love you,
    -me

  4. The 3 colors of gold eyeshadow (Mac #) reference is HILARIOUS! I am sure that gave your girls a chuckle :)
